In
our pilot analyze, we draped a slim, adaptable electrode array above the surface of the volunteer’s brain. The electrodes recorded neural indicators and sent them to a speech decoder, which translated the alerts into the terms the person supposed to say. It was the very first time a paralyzed man or woman who couldn’t communicate experienced utilized neurotechnology to broadcast full words—not just letters—from the brain.

That demo was the fruits of more than a decade of investigation on the underlying mind mechanisms that govern speech, and we’re enormously very pleased of what we’ve attained so far. But we’re just obtaining began.
My lab at UCSF is operating with colleagues about the planet to make this know-how safe and sound, stable, and dependable plenty of for daily use at home. We’re also operating to improve the system’s overall performance so it will be value the effort.
